The family vault opens upon bootleggers, rumrunners, butchers, tenders of dogs and the tenderhearted in this exhumation of pioneer vigor and the family connection we all must one day claim.

Swander’s vivid poetry tells the story of one woman’s journey across the Midwest to retrieve her mother’s body and drive it back for burial. On this true-to-life journey, Mary’s godmother has come along to help her with the difficult task and passes the time telling stories. She carves a multi-faceted history of family connectedness through generations of life and death.
