Kelly is a painter, sculptor and can throw a mean pot! If he is working in clay he would rather be sculpting but he does much to contribute to the functional pottery produced at Kunzler Studios. For his own work, his figurative style lends itself to the story telling quality of his work. Kelly’s oil paintings incorporate areas of loose brush marks and unfinished areas with more tightly painted sections. Pencil drawings, text, collage materials, and primed and unprimed areas of the painting surface are left visible as part of the narrative. His drawings also have a loose style often colored with watercolor and treated much the same as his oil paintings with marker, pencil, text and negative space left showing his working process.
